White Band Day 3, Cardiff, December 10th - Wrapping the Pierhead Building

The cast and audience of the Trade Justice pantomime - along with MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaigners and the Directors of Oxfam Cymru, Christian Aid / Cymorth Cristnogol and Friends of the Earth Cymru - wrapped Cardiff Bay's Pierhead Building with a huge white band.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY day in National Assembly, 6th December

The MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Wales coalition hosted a day of activities in the National Assembly for Wales on Tuesday 6th December 2005.

The day aimed to provide an opportunity for AMs to: voice their concerns about global poverty, discuss progress made in 2005, assess what ‘still needs to be done’ in 2005, and to consider what Wales can do to Make Poverty History in 2006.

Peter Hain meets students at Neath Port Talbot College, November 18th 2005

Peter Hain, the Secretary of State for Wales and Northern Ireland, was quizzed by a great turnout of 150 students at Neath Port Talbot College on how he as their constituency MP and member of the Cabinet would take their concerns to the WTO and carry forward poverty campaigning into the future.

Monmouth lobbies to MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY, July 4th 2005

The crowd at Saturday’s Make Poverty History Lobby in Agincourt Square watched Deputy Mayor, Caroline Pearce, present certificates to 8 new places that provide fair trade food and drinks.

Caroline Pearce then tied a volunteer hand and foot in tape. Fairtrade Forum member Mary Newman said “This shows how unfair trade rules, crippling national debt and insufficient aid are the bonds tying poor countries down making poor countries even poorer”. He was later unwrapped by the youngest members of the crowd.

Over 100 postcards to Tony Blair were signed and posted urging him to use the G8 Summit and other opportunities this year to persuade world leaders to take steps to Make Poverty History.

Knighton Clock Tower Wrapped, July 2nd 2005

A giant white 'Make Poverty History' band was wrapped around the clocktower in Knighton in an event that promoted fair trade.

Tenby MAKEPOVERTYHISTORYMarch & Coffee Morning, July 2nd

Over 100 people were involved in local action against poverty. Local churches and other individuals worked together to take a stand against injustice.The 100+ people were involved in both a Fair trade coffee morning and a Make Poverty History march through Tenby. We had lots of people from all over Pembrokeshire: Neyland, Pembroke, Haverfordwest, Tenby, Kilgetty, Narberth & even some people from Swansea! We also had people of all ages' from young to old - 2 years to 90+years!

Bridgend's Band of Hope, July 1st

Bridgend Quakers created a giant white band, one eigth of a mile long, encircling part of Bridgend town centre. More than 50 people stood with their heads held high to join the call for an end to world poverty.

Pupils Wrap Millbank Primary School in MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY white band, July 1st

On Friday 1st July schools throughout the country organised a 'wrapping of their buildings' to show their support for the Make Poverty History Campaign. At Millbank we went around the school with a special tape held up by all the children. which is reminiscent of the white silicone wrist bands worn by many people.

Clergy of St David's Diocese Sleep Rough in Kidwelly Town Centre, July 1st

The Vicar of Kidwelly, the Rev’d Hugh James, and colleagues from the diocese of St David’s made themselves homeless for a night on Friday 1 July from 10pm. They braved the weather without tents or fires in a bid to raise awareness of the national ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign.

St Joseph's R C High School supports MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY, June 23rd

Year 12 students at St Joseph's R C High School, Newport, display a Make Poverty History banner following a workshop from CEWC-Cymru. The school supports a number of charities and aid agencies, and is organising special events to coincide with the G8 summit in Edinburgh.

MOTIV8 4 G8, Cardiff, 11th June

Around 70 people from across Wales attended the event in preparation for the G8 rally in Edinburgh.

Rubiks Cube supports MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY, May 14th

A fortnightly hip hop and drum and bass clubnight in Swansea ran a night to support the campaign to local clubbers. All the DJs and MC's played for free donating their fee to the cause and along with the usual drinking and dancing clubbers were encouraged to textmessage their support to Tony Blair ('Text Tony') whilst watching videos like 1,2,3 click advert. The inside of the venue was also covered in white make poverty history tape and posters to inform clubbers and loads of white bands were sold.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Rally, Temple of Peace, Cardiff

Around 50 people attended a rally at the Temple of Peace. Following a sybolic wrapping of the building, Craig Owen from Oxfam Cymru gave a detailed presentation about the causes of poverty and why 2005 is so important. Discussion then focussed on how to mobilise people for the Edinburgh G8 Rally and how to effectively share information in Wales.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Wales Launched

In order to mark the start of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign in Wales, a broad range people from different organisations symbolically consigned the word 'POVERTY' (TLODI in Welsh) to the National Museum of Wales.

The stone circle nearby was also wrapped in a white band - a symbol of the campaign - creating a uniquely Welsh picture. Look out for wrappings of other landmarks, or organise your own!
